5 ways to be creative with PR

By Rebecca Hughes , Friday, 25th October 2019 | 0 comments

From taglines like Nike’s ‘Just do it’ to publicity stunts such as the pop-up ice-cream store from Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things appearing in Dublin, creativity is key in the world of PR - be that technology PR or consumer PR. It’s what grabs people’s attention, leaves a lasting impression and promotes brands.

Of course, creativity comes in many forms and it doesn’t necessarily have to come from wracking your brain for hours trying to come up with the next killer catchphrase. Here are a few ways to make your technology PR more creative…

1. Be brave with your brand

First things first, start with your brand. From your company name to the core pillars of your organisation, being bold and thinking outside the box when it comes to your messaging will help you to differentiate your business and stand out in a competitive market. For example, you could choose to champion employee initiatives such as perhaps becoming the first in your sector to introduce a four-day work week. Whatever it is, be brave and shout about your message as this is what makes your company unique.

2. Stats the way to do it!

Having worked in the world of technology PR for more than 20 years, we have learned that surveys are a fantastic way of finding out more about the sector in which you work and also establishing your company as an expert in your field. In-depth research can produce strong findings which can be weaved into press releases, media interviews and sales collateral. It’s just about choosing the right, on-trend topics and headline-creating questions!

3. Images often speak louder than words

Of course, the written word is incredibly important, especially in the world of technology PR when you are developing products and services that can be complex in nature. But the visuals that go alongside these words are just as important and provide a real opportunity to make a lasting impression. A great image concept can really make a story in a newspaper pop and lead a prospective customer to pick up the phone.

4. Look who’s talking

While it’s good to talk about your own organisation, sometimes letting someone else do the talking is even more effective and memorable. After all, they do say that third-party recognition is one of the best ways to validate your products and services. From video testimonials on your social media channels to in-depth case studies for your website and shared out to media, spreading the word about customer successes is one of the best and most creative ways of showcasing what your business is doing for your customers and can do for others.

5. Start a trend

Social media has become an integral part of technology PR so embrace it and take advantage. Perhaps with your next product launch, you could create a hashtag that people can use when taking about and sharing the story. Alternatively, you could create a national day of your own, for instance #NationalDataDay, and tie that in with a new campaign. Shareable content has never been more impactful.

Thinking creatively when it comes to technology PR is a sure-fire to ensure not only that the media pays attention, but that prospective customers do as well. With the industry continuing to grow at a rapid pace, it’s more crucial than ever to come up with new ideas that get people talking and make your brand stand out. Remember, it doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to be creative.
